Castro

It is a pleasant non-tourist historic centre in a dominant position at the top of a hill, overlooking a turquoise blue sea. The massive walls of the Castle that gives name to the little town are all scattered with... light blue bell flowers! The Castle is a mighty fortress dating back to the times of Angiò's kingdom, but probably built on a preceding Byzantine or Norman defensive structure. It has a quadrangular plant with four towers, three quadrangular and a cylindrical one and at present is undergoing restoration. One wonders what ever will all that small towns be able to do with all these monuments, so massive and so difficult to maintain...
In front of the Castle there is a wide piazza with a belvedere overlooking the sea, flanked by pleasant buildings of the beginning of XX century, the benches are all occupied by chattering people. The main street leads to the smaller square of the church, a nice example of local Romanesque, always made of the beautiful light limestone.
The neat small side streets are flanked by light low buildings, with a light stone paving, and generally end on a terrace overlooking the sea. The day we where there there was a procession in honour of the local Saint.
