Canyon Gorropu and Flumineddu
The stream Flumineddu goes down northward cutting Supramonte embedded between high rock walls as far as to reach a mountain chain 900m high. Here the river literally cut the mountain in two, creating the Gorropu Gorge: for 1km the Flumineddu runs between rock walls rising up to 400m over the stream bed!
The Gorropu is the deepest canyon in Europe.
At the beginning of the gorge the stream deepens in a splendid underground cave to exit from it about 60m onward on the opposite side if a rocky massif.
Because of the presence of this cave and of some rocky cliffs, to follow the Gorropu entirely in its length the canyoning equipment is necessary. Anyhow the Gorropu may give beautiful emotions also by means of a promenade simply a little adventurous. Starting from the valley it is possible to climb 90% of the gorge, making one's way between giant cobblestones as big as houses and enjoying the view of the astounding rock walls 400m high. In this portion the river bed is dry, as water runs underground.
Going down from high one finds splendid emerald little lakes with characteristic wave shaped rocks, and one can see the confluence of Flumineddu and the wonderful Codula Orbisi. The cave is only accessible from this side, but to reach rope manoeuvres are necessary.
To accede from valley one must start from Dorgali going towards Baunei on Orientale Sarda road. After a few kilometres, on the right there is the road going down and crossing the valley of Oddoene as far as the little bridge of S'Abba Arva.
The bridge collapsed in 2004 and was replaced by a pedestrian one, so you have to park the car. The bridge crossed we turn left and follow a long pleasant path of around 6km to reach the beginning of the Gorropu' Gorge.
Along this path is often possible to go down to the river and take refreshing baths.
To accede from high you must reach the area called Campos Bargios: if you have no local guide you should dispose of a detailed map of the area.
