Ortucchio Castle

This castle, looking extremely solid and impregnable, was built in 1465 by Antonio Piccolomini on the remains of a previous fortificatio, from which a large quadrangular tower remains. It is formed by a quadrangular enclosure with four cylindrical towers (one destroyed) on powerful, inclined bases.
Surrounded by a large moat, you reach the castle by means of a drawbridge; still, today you need a lot of imagination to picture the splendid scene in which the building was immersed in the Piccolomini era: Ortucchio Castle was, in fact, completely surrounded by the waters of the Fucino Lake and was accessible only by waterways!

A short distance away from Ortucchio, last stop on the itinerary, is Trasacco, where an odd-looking tower rises above another tower with square base rising on a circular base. The building is very tall and powerfully overlooks the entire tower.
