Versione italiana  English Version

Fossa and the church of Santa Maria delle Grotte

The church of Santa Maria delle Grotte - In correspondence with the first houses of the town of Fossa breaks off a street to the right which leads to , in less than 50 meters, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grotte, Cistercian-Gothic form.
The church, characterized by a very simple exterior appearance, inside contains some of the oldest frescoes in Abruzzo! Those to the right and beyond are from the Benedictine school of the 13th century, while those to the left are of the Tuscan school from the 14th and 15th centuries; to note on the left-hand wall is the Assumption of Cola da Cosentino (1486).

The Enclosed Castle of Fossa -
Typical typology of an enclosed castle located above the town center with the function of refuge for the inhabitants in case of attack, the castle of Fossa has a trapezoidal shape with square towers at the corners and a large, powerful cylindrical tower at the highest point (which almost surely existed before the castle). The fortification is in ruins but is still perfectly legible. The difference between it and other castles similar is that Fossa castle touches and grounds itself in the lowest part of the inhabited area; this is rather unusual for an enclosed castle.
