Guida turistica e fotografica del comune di Scurcola Marsicana castle, provincia di L'Aquila, Abruzzo

Versione italiana  English Version

Scurcola Marsicana castle

A heavy triangular layout, with, at the summits, strong cylindrical towers with powerful bases, give a majestic appearance to this fortress, today invaded by vegetation.
And the fortress of Scurcola is, in fact, one of the most evolved examples of military architecture present in Abruzzo.
It seems to have been designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, a true master in the field of military architecture, convened to this purpose by Virginio Orsini in 1490.
The towers are calculated for allowing the defenders to attack assailants not only from above (as is typically the case with medieval fortifications) but also from the side, thanks to a calculated system of openings in the towers.
Another peculiar characteristic is seen in the fact that, not only are the towers taller than the wall (obviously) but were also designed in a way to not interrupt the rampart walk for allowing maximum speed in movement and thus quick intervention.
