Casperia
The historic church is at the top of the summit of a hill, at whose peak rises the Romanesque belltower of the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the foliage of a large, monumental holm-oak tree, making the skyline of the town unique. The actual historic center corresponds with the fortified town of Aspra, name of the town until 1947 when it was changed to Casperia, this according to the hypothesis (not proven) that Virgil's ancient Casperia rose here. The town, in the form of a dome, still has a medieval appearance characterized by the narrow uphill streets which come out onto little piazzas and emerge from alternating houses and elegant buildings, with the mostly conserved early Middle-Ages city wall, along which you can take a short but panoramic walk. The historic center, entirely pedestrian, is well-maintained; the pavements were recently redone. Arriving in front of the Entry to the town, on the opposite side of the piazza is the Baroque Annunziata Church, in whose interior is a beautiful "Annunciazione" by Sassoferrato. The other church at the summit of the town is the parochial church of San Giovanni Battista. Apart from the single monuments, what is really pleasant is to stroll around the town: rich in attractive views, buildings with lovely architecture, it makes a particularly harmonious environment. The old Aspra, founded between the 10th and 11th centuries, passed under the "Santa Sede" (Vatican city). Between the 13th and 14th centuries in importance and population, extending its dominance onto nearby castles, such as Caprignano and Montefiolo. It surrendered in 1347 to Cola di Rienzo and following was subjected to Niccolò di Pone de'Ranieri from Perugia. It was, at the end, under Savelli, confiscated by the Pope in 1592. The historical archive is particularly rich in documents relative to the historical events of the castle beginning in the 12th century.
