Posta Fibreno Lake, guida turistica e fotografica del comune di Posta Fibreno, provincia di Frosinone
Posta Fibreno Lake
At approximateley 40km from Frosinone going inwards, the lake, a Nature Reserve, extends for about 30 hectares and is created by the sources of the Fibreno River, a large group of sources that run at the feet of the limestone Western Marsica mountain chain, its flow varying depending on the season but always noteworthy.
The charming location, little known to all except the locals, is ideal for spending a day with children and teens; in fact, it is possible to swim, rent paddleboats for exploring the meanders of the lake, go along the nature paths to observe the numerous species of birds that live there... a well-equipped Territorial Laboratory of Environmental Education with vistors center that takes care of teaching.
The fresh waters of the lake are always in movement, transparent, and are at a constant temperature and in certain spots reach 15 meters deep.
Along its edge the basin of the lake is surrounded by a thick bed of reeds that extends for approximately 50 meters and in some distances reaches a depth of around 500 meters from the shore. In this dense vegetation open tight and winding waterways that make up a natural habitat for many aquatic animals and birds. Many species of grass and rare shrubs or those of particular interest find their ideal environment in this oasis.
There are also many species of fish, like trout, three-spine stickleback, tench, carp, barbel, but the fish are reserved for those who live in Posta Fibreno.
Characteristic and perhaps the only one in Europe is the floating island, called La Rota by the natives for its rounded shape, formed by an accumulation of rootstock, peat, radishes, and marsh grass. The island has a diameter of around 30 meters and moves on the lake according to the action of the wind and the variations in the flow of the sources underground that run into the lake. To fully appreciate the characteristics and dimensions, it is a good idea to go up into the town and see it from above.
