You can take a lot of walks in the park of the Simbruini Mountains. The walk which we have selected shows many of the park's characteristics, departs and arrives in a set area, and beginning from a higher elevation, it allows you to avoid large uphill climbs on foot.
Very beautiful path that passes among thick beech groves and small, open pastures displaying very different environments. Leaving from a high point such as Campaegli, the difference in level that you have to do is very reduced and makes it more or less accessible to all. The route can also be done by bicycle, by horse, or on skis in the winter. There are signs only on a part of the path, and it is therefore recommended that you use a topographic map and a compass. The route is slightly longer for arriving at the large plain of Camposecco Field, and will will explain a deviation.
The route is in large part described in the "Path Guide of the Regional Park of the Simbruini Mountains", and we have modified it and expanded on it a little.
Uphill difference in level: 141m - Maximum elevation: 1496m - Travel time : 4 hours - Length 9.8 Km.
Vagabondo's deviation prolongs the route by about 2 km and another 60 meters uphill; plan for an extra hour of travel time if you choose to take it.
By car: Arrive at Cervara di Roma, following the street that, with many sharp turns, continues to go up to the side of the town; you reach the high point and continue towards the mountain. You'll reach the first buildings of the touristic villages of Campaegli and continue going to the horse-riding grounds.
On foot: The guide says: "From the parking area of Campaegli, you go along the asphalt street for around 200 meters, then to the north on the dirt road that coasts along Mount Castell'Amato and that goes into Lepre Valley."
Really the orientation of the small touristic village of Campaegli isn't that easy...to "park" the guide means in front of the horse-riding grounds; you then follow the street that goes northwest for 200 meters, and you find a dirt road that goes off to the right to the north (at the height of the sports' field).
After a half-hour, you arrive at the intersection of the route 652, which is on the left; you'll go right (east). After 1 km on the right, you'll find a sheep-track that goes into the Coste del Vallone valley (be careful to walk actually 1 km from the intersection of the 652 before turning right: after 500 meters, in fact, you'll find a small valley with a path that has nothing to do with it but could be confused for Coste del Vallone).
Now the path heads east with Coste del Vallone in the background; however, if you want a view overlooking Camposecco Field, it is time for a derivation: we can do so by following path 652, which zigzags towards the north or head to the north away from every path; in short, we will overlook a very vast plain that is 150 meters below (if you don't want to prolong the route the deviation can be limited to the having a look at the panorama can going back from exactly where you came).
Having reached Camposecco Field, you coast along it towards the southeast until the sheep-track is visible and goes into the woods. Go back up along a small valley towards the south. From the entrance of the woods, in around 15 minutes, you'll meet back up again with our path that exits from Coste del Vallone.
You go up towards the south until meeting the rocks of Tre Confini (1427 meters), crossroads of different itineraries. You'll continue to go towards the south on that which is a dirt road until turning right abruptly (west) in correspondence with a small hollow which retreats into the beech groves and leads to Campaegli (3 km).
