Extreme southern layer of the Sabini Mountains, to the east it defines the border of the Campagna. Towards the south and east it defines the border of the Aniene Valley. The naturalistic richness of the Regional Natural Park of the Lucretili Mountains resides in the unusual landscape configuration. The mixed woods are dominated by oak trees. The darkness of the holm-oak (Quercus ilex) and the cheerful turkey-oak (Quercus cerrus) contend for the sky with maple trees, ash trees, and hornbeams.
This creates, especially in autumn, panoramas of very varied colors and delicate textures. The undergrowth is very thick and impenetrable, fed by the light that filters through the foliage.
But all is not without the large beech-trees: their mono-species forests with the large light columns of trunks are on the peaks and look down at the mixed woods from above.
We propose a walk along the only path that goes into the integral reserve of the Castiglione Valley. The path was well thought out by the "Corpo Forestale" (Park Rangers) who monitor a nesting zone of golden eagles, in order to allow visitors to observe the nest and parents without disturbing them.
Obviously a good pair of binoculars will come in handy!
The route is short (40 minutes going), not stressful and suitable even for children; it is slightly uphill but never tiring.
From Licenza, by care, take the street going towards Percile; after several hundred meters a junction will appear on the left for the village of Civitella; follow it.
The street raises rapidly uphill. After four sharp turns and then a pretty straight stretch, the panorama opens over the valley of Castiglione in correspondence with a left-hand curve. Here is our path (indicated as 306b); on the left there is an area in which you can park.
At the moment of our visit they were creating a small "eagle museum"; perhaps you will find it already open.
The first part of the route you follow an unpaved stretch that is not very interesting (around 8-10 minutes), then it turns to the right and left, and the real path begins which goes into the woods.
The walk's stretches alternate between open and scenic points and stretches in the woods. At the end you arrive at meadows and a small eagle-observation point that is equipped for a rest. It is a very pleasant place, especially for taking in the afternoon sun in autumn and spring.
