Of all of the ways for reaching Mount Autore this route is surely the most scenic: the path is always uphill, with large views in every direction, reaching the summit of Mount Autore which, in spite of is modest elevation in respect to other elevations of the Apennines, is one of the most panoramic in all of central Italy.
Our path always goes along the line in which the beech-tree forest gives way to the lengths of fields of the crest created by the cold winter winds: the best point for observing the old and contorted trees. Before the last uphill climb to the top you will find the Fossagliola Fountain to quench your thirst.
The path is not always clear, but, with a minimum bit of observation, it will not be difficult to continue along the crest.
The description of the route is described in the "Guida ai Sentieri del Parco Regionale dei Monti Simbruini" (Path Guide of the Simbruini Mountain Regional Park), this route in particular is extracted from and described in the opposite direction of path 651, the High Path of the Simbruini.
Rise: 416m.
maximum altitude: 1855m Mount Autore
Travel Time: going around 2 hours, 1hour and 30 min. return
Length: approximately 9 Km.
The deviation for the return on Coleman Path adds around 140 to the rise but should not add a great deal of time to the route.
The Path.
You can leave your car in the parking square (1439 m.) from where the paved path departs for the Sanctuary of the Very Holy Trinità.
Our path leaves right here: exactly where the paved path begins for the sanctuary, you turn right and will reach the crest of the rocky mass structure which dominates the sanctuary.
A steep climb of about 1 km. leads you to an altitude of 1662, on the summit of Tagliata Hill. We continue on the crest this time going downhill, until reaching Procoio Pass (1589 m). Here we meet the Coleman Path, which could be an interesting variant for the turn...
From Procoio Pass, following the very clear indications, go up the hill, and you wil enter the beech-tree woods and on a nice mule track you will arrive at Fossagliola Fountain (1687 m., also called "Scifi Fountain).
You turn left on a steep and wide mule track and then, near a cross, to the right for a short, very sunny stretch. Crossing the wooded area on the eastern side is Mount Autore and you will shortly arrive at the summit (1885 m.).
You follow the same route for the return or else you can deviate along Coleman Path.
The Coleman Path is a long path which connects Subiaco and Tivoli; we can use i, once have turned around at Procoio Pass (1589 ,) for going down to the Trinità: from the pass you will be able to easily make out the indicated path which goes down in a southeastern direction.
To get around a rocky ridge the path descends to an altitude of approximately 1300 m. before going back up to the sanctuary (and from here to the parking area along the sacred path); thus, you reach around 140 meters rise above that where you began.
There is also a way to admire the Tagliata precipice from below, 400 meters high.
